Wishes Granted: How Grants can get you the resources you need in your classroom

Have you ever wondered how to write a grant? Is it a task that just seems daunting or impossible with your current workload?  Whether private or public, there is money out there waiting for you! This presentation will share tips, tricks, and how to spend just one weekend a year on grant writing. That's right, just two days a year is all you need to secure funds for hands-on materials, field trips, and membership fees! You will leave the session with ideas of grant topics, an action plan, a list of valuable resources, and a firm understanding of the steps you need to take to make your first grant a success.

Covey Denton
K-8 Educator, Sallie B Howard School of Arts and Science

Covey Denton is a K-8 Science Educator at the Sallie B Howard School of the Arts and Science. She has been teaching science for seven years, and in that time has secured over $100K in grants for her classroom. Her students have won numerous awards, including first place in the Scholastic Tech4Innovation competition, 1st place in the Celebrate the Mouse Video Research Essay competition, Regional Winners for the Exploravision competition in 2019 and 2020, Semi-Finalists for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition in 2020 and 2021 and a Grand Prize winner in the Citgo Discovery Education Fueling Education competition in 2020. She has a Bachelors and Masters in Biomedical Engineering from UNC Chapel Hill and a Masters in STEM Education through the NASA STEM Endeavor program at Adams State University. In addition to teaching, Covey enjoys presenting science on the news as a special guest on the WITN news shows, she serves on the Board for National Mid-level Science Teaching Association and the board of her local science museum, Imagination Station. She enjoys volunteering at the Ronald McDonald house, Baptist Children’s Home and Eastern NC School of the Deaf. Covey is a mom of three wonderful children and resides in rural eastern NC.
